Own a Piece ofLegendary Main Street SturgisThe Main Street Community Pride Committee was organized as part of Future Sturgis. The past couple of years we have raised thousands of dollars in local fundraising campaigns. We have used that money for new benches, flowers, picnic tables, banners, kiosk directories, trees and garbage receptacles for Main Street. Our goal this year is new lighting on Main Street. Lighting creates an ambiance that entices people to shop, dine and be entertained on main street. It is vital that we make Legendary Main Street Sturgis an inviting, beautiful place that we can all enjoy. We want out guests to enjoy the look and feel of our unique community. We want them to have a fun experience and to come back often. New lighting is a huge goal, but not insurmountable. It is said, "As goes Main Street, so goes the community." Our primary fundraising effort is to sell commemorative plaques that will be placed on each light on Main Street. Please consider purchasing one of these plaques on behalf of your business or family. This will be a permanent acknowledgment of your contribution to improving Main Street. The City of Sturgis has made a sizeable donation and, with your help, these lights can go up this summer. You may even choose which light pole you would like your plaque placed on. Download the full PDF brochure for all the details on how become a permanent part of Legendary Main Street Sturgis! February 2, 2010 Dear Future Sturgis Retail/Industrial Committee Member: The City of Sturgis together with RDG Planning & Design, is currently undergoing the task of updating the current City of Sturgis Comprehensive plan. We would like to invite your committee to participate as a Key Stake Holder for this program. You group has been identified as an important leaders and community development resource to help establish this program in our area. We hope to benefit from your leadership, experience, and commitment to improving the quality of life in the Sturgis Community. Some of you may receive duplicate messages due to your involvement in multiple groups, and it is important that you participate in any and all meetings that you are able. A comprehensive plan is a statement of goals and objectives that establishes a community's vision for the future. While not technically a legal document dictating how a community is developed, a comprehensive plan is meant to outline a vision to be realized over time via planning policy and regulatory tools. Therefore, a comprehensive plan contains policy goals for every aspect of the community, including, for example, land use, transportation, housing, parks and open space, infrastructure, and economic development. The objective of the Steering Committee is to encourage emerging leaders to address community concerns. Questions of how to deal with growth and change often elicit very different responses from citizens. Long-time residents sometimes resist change, whether in the place, or the way of life that they have known. Relative newcomers may be more receptive to what growth can bring with it: better local jobs and shopping and a greater variety of activities and amenities. Others may simply be unaware of the degree of growth and change that is just over the horizon and how it may affect them. The process of preparing the comprehensive plan must raise public awareness of the quantitative measures of growth the community is facing and the qualitative measures of quality of life that may affected. The planning process must often act as a wake-up call, prompting recognition of the trends underway and their consequences, raising awareness of the choices to be made in how this growth might be best managed, and guiding public opinion toward a consensus on what approach is best for the common good of the community. Developing leadership and community development capacity requires your involvement in a local partnership. Through this partnership, you can help make Sturgis the best place possible to live and work. This is a valuable educational and team-building opportunity to marshal resources and address local concerns through task force activities. I hope you will join us in the important endeavor on March 9th at 11:00 A.M. in the Meade Room of the Sturgis Community Center. If you are unable to attend at the given time we would welcome you to come and participate in the Community Kick –Off meeting that will be held in conjunction with the regularly scheduled planning commission meeting, to be held on March 9th at 6:30 P.M. in the upstairs conference room of City Hall. Thank you for your support and I look forward to your participation. Sincerely,
Rick BushRick BushDirector of Community Development City of Sturgis
